Home & Workplace EVCharging, Arranged for You

More drivers across Northampton, Daventry and Rushden are switching to electric vehicles, and the biggest question most of them have is whether their existing electrics can cope with a home charger. Doe Electrical, run by Tyler Doe with 15 years' experience, carries out the groundwork: checking your incoming supply, assessing your consumer unit, and identifying any fault finding or upgrade work needed before a charger goes in.

The charger installation itself is carried out by our qualified partner technicians, who specialise in EV charge point fitting day in, day out. We arrange this for you so you get one point of contact, from the initial electrical assessment through to a working charger on your wall or driveway, without having to juggle separate tradespeople yourself.

Every property is different. A Victorian terrace in Northampton town centre may need a consumer unit upgrade before a charger can be safely connected, while a newer build in Daventry might already have the capacity in place. We look at your specific setup, flag anything that needs attention, and make sure the wider electrical work around the charger is sound.

We work across Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes, Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire, with most of our EV-related work concentrated around Northampton, Daventry and Rushden. Whether you're a homeowner adding a driveway charger or a business owner wanting charging points for staff or customers, we can get the electrical side organised.

Who it's for

  • Homeowners who have bought or are about to collect an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle
  • Landlords wanting to add charging as a tenant amenity
  • Small businesses looking to offer charging for staff or customer vehicles
  • Anyone whose existing consumer unit or supply needs checking before a charger can go in

When you need it

  • You've ordered an EV and need charging sorted before it arrives
  • Your current consumer unit is old or doesn't have spare capacity
  • You're unsure whether your property's electrical supply can take a charger
  • You want a second charging point added for a workplace or additional vehicle
  • You're renovating or rewiring and want charger provision built in now

Why the GroundworkMatters Before Charging

An EV charger pulls a sustained, high-level current for hours at a time, which is a very different load from a kettle or washing machine. Getting the supporting electrical work wrong, or skipping it altogether, can cause real problems down the line.

Overloaded consumer units

Older consumer units weren't designed with EV charging loads in mind. Adding a charger without checking capacity first can lead to tripping circuits or, in worse cases, overheating.

Inadequate earthing and bonding

EV chargers need correct earthing arrangements for safety. If a property's existing earthing isn't suitable, this needs identifying and addressing before a charger is connected.

Undersized supply cable

If the cable feeding your consumer unit isn't sized correctly for the additional charger load, it can run hot over long charging sessions, which is a fire risk if left unchecked.

Common mistakes we see

  • ×Booking a charger fitted without anyone first checking the consumer unit or supply capacity
  • ×Assuming any socket near the driveway is suitable for a dedicated EV circuit
  • ×Not considering cable routing distance between the consumer unit and the charging point
  • ×Ignoring signs of an ageing fuse board, like warm covers or flickering lights, before adding more load
  • ×Ordering a charger without checking if a Type 2 tethered or untethered unit suits your vehicle and parking setup

How it works

Our process

  1. 01

    Inspection

We visit your property to inspect your consumer unit, incoming supply, earthing arrangement and the proposed location for the charger, whether that's a wall-mounted position or a post near a driveway.

  2. 02

    Diagnosis

We assess whether your existing setup can support a charger as-is, or whether work such as a consumer unit upgrade, fault finding, or additional bonding is needed first, and we explain exactly what's required and why.

  3. 03

    Execution

We carry out any preparatory electrical work on our side, such as consumer unit changes or supply upgrades, and arrange for our qualified partner technicians to carry out the charger installation itself.

  4. 04

    Testing & Verification

Once the charger is fitted, the installation is tested to confirm it's drawing power correctly, protective devices are functioning, and the circuit is operating as it should before you start using it.

  5. 05

    Completion & Guarantee

We talk you through how the system works, hand over any documentation from the installation, and stand behind the electrical work we've carried out. We guarantee our work, with the detail depending on the job.

What you get

The benefits

Faster, safer charging

A dedicated EV circuit, properly sized and protected, charges far more reliably than an extension lead from a household socket, and without the overheating risk that comes with it.

Electrical safety checked first

Because we check your supply and consumer unit before any charger goes in, you're not left finding out about an underlying electrical issue months later.

Longer equipment life

Correctly sized cable, earthing and protective devices mean your charger and your home's wider electrics aren't being placed under unnecessary strain.

Avoiding costly rework

Identifying consumer unit or supply issues upfront means you're not paying to have a charger removed and refitted later because the groundwork was missed.

One point of contact

Rather than coordinating an electrician and a separate charger specialist yourself, we arrange the partner technician side of things for you.

Peace of mind

With £10 million public liability insurance in place and every electrician in our team fully qualified, you can be confident the assessment and preparatory work is in safe hands.

In detail

Understanding YourEV Charger Options

There's more to EV charging than picking a brand off a website. The right setup depends on your vehicle, your parking arrangement, and what your property's electrics can support.

Tethered vs untethered chargers

A tethered charger comes with a fixed cable attached to the unit, so you simply pull it out and plug into your car. An untethered charger has a socket on the unit itself, and you use your own cable, which some drivers prefer for flexibility between vehicles.

Which option suits you often comes down to how many vehicles will use the charger and whether they have different cable types. We factor this into our assessment so the recommendation fits your actual use, not just a generic default.

Consumer unit and supply checks

Before any charger is connected, we check whether your consumer unit has the capacity and protective devices to support the additional load, and whether your incoming supply is adequate for sustained high-current draw over several hours.

In older properties particularly, this can reveal that a consumer unit upgrade is needed first. In newer properties, the existing setup may already be sufficient, but we don't assume either way; we check.

Earthing arrangements

EV chargers rely on a correct earthing arrangement, and the right approach depends on your property's existing setup. Some properties need an earth rod installed specifically for the charger as an additional protective measure.

This isn't a step that can be skipped safely, so it forms part of our assessment before any installation work is arranged, regardless of how straightforward the job looks on the surface.

Cable routing and cable type

Where the charger sits relative to your consumer unit affects cable length, routing, and whether armoured cable such as SWA is needed, particularly for outdoor runs across a driveway or garden.

For longer runs or exposed routes, SWA cable buried at the correct depth protects against mechanical damage, which matters for a circuit that will be used daily for years.

Domestic vs commercial installations

A single domestic charger is usually a self-contained job once the supply and consumer unit have been checked. Commercial installations, such as a small fleet of chargers for staff vehicles, involve more planning around total site load and how multiple chargers share available capacity.

For businesses, we look at the bigger picture of the site's overall electrical demand before any chargers are specified, so you're not left with a setup that can't support everyday use.

EV Charger Installation: your questions

How much does EV charger installation cost in Northampton?

+

Installs are priced per job once we've assessed your supply, consumer unit and the work involved, as every property is different. Our call-out is £120, which includes the first hour of work or diagnosis, then £45 per hour after that for properties within 10 miles of Great Houghton, NN4; further afield is quoted separately.

Who actually fits the charger?

+

The charger installation itself is carried out by our qualified partner technicians who specialise in EV charge points. Doe Electrical arranges this for you and handles the related electrical work, such as checking your supply and consumer unit, or any fault finding needed beforehand.

How long does the whole process take?

+

It depends on whether your property needs preparatory work like a consumer unit upgrade. We don't put a fixed timeframe on it until we've assessed your property, because every job is different.

Will my consumer unit need upgrading?

+

Some will, some won't. We check your existing consumer unit and supply as part of the assessment and tell you clearly if an upgrade is needed before a charger can be safely fitted.

Is the charger installation guaranteed?

+

We guarantee our work, with the length and scope depending on the job itself. The charger installation is carried out by our partner technicians as part of an arranged, coordinated process.

How long does an EV charger typically last?

+

Most home chargers are built for years of regular outdoor and indoor use, provided the supporting electrics, such as correct earthing and a properly sized circuit, are in place from the start.

Can you help with an emergency charger fault?

+

We're available Monday to Sunday, 6am to 10pm, for electrical fault finding, including issues affecting an EV charger's supply. Get in touch and we'll talk through what's happening.

Do you cover Daventry and Rushden as well as Northampton?

+

Yes. While we're best known in Northampton, Daventry and Rushden, we also cover the wider Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes, Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire areas.
